LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: There are many interesting applications of Newton’s laws of motion, a few more of which are presented in this section. These serve also to illustrate some further…

LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: Success in problem solving is obviously necessary to understand and apply physical principles, not to mention the more immediate need of passing exams. The basics of problem…

LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: Forces are given many names, such as push, pull, thrust, lift, weight, friction, and tension. Traditionally, forces have been grouped into several categories and given names relating…

LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: Baseball relief pitcher Mariano Rivera was so highly regarded that during his retirement year, opposing teams conducted farewell presentations when he played at their stadiums. The Minnesota…

LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: Newton’s second law of motion is closely related to Newton’s first law of motion. It mathematically states the cause and effect relationship between force and changes in motion.…

LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: Experience suggests that an object at rest will remain at rest if left alone, and that an object in motion tends to slow down and stop unless…

LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, you will be able to: Dynamics is the study of the forces that cause objects and systems to move. To understand this, we need a working definition of force. Our intuitive definition of force—that…
